En France, le nom est surtout porté en Savoie. Il est également assez courant en Italie du Nord (Vénétie). On trouve aussi en Italie les formes Bisone (Piémont) et Bisoni (Lombardie). Tous ces noms semblent être des dérivés d'une forme dialectale de l'italien "bigio" (en français "bis") qui signifie "de couleur grise" et a été employé soit comme surnom lié au teint ou à la couleur des cheveux, soit comme nom de personne. Le nom de famille Bisi est fréquent en Lombardie et en Émilie-Romagne. Un rapport avec le mot "bison" semble douteux, même si celui-ci est attesté depuis le Moyen Âge. Il y a aussi des Bison en Vendée, le sens étant sans doute le même.
